2022 “EIA CUP” English Speech Competition Finals

After a fierce competitive preliminary round of the 2022 EIA CUPEnglish Speech Competition, seven candidates reached the final. The final competition was successfully held on May 18th in the Qizhi Building. Professor Zhong Senwen, Vice President of Guangzhou Huashang College; Professor Yu Huifen, Dean of the International School; Professor Li Pinghai, Vice Dean of the International School; Dr. Sal Mirza; Mr. Colin Black and the staff from the International School attended the competition.

Contestants Giving Speeches

Contestants gave wonderful speeches based on the theme of retelling Chinese anti-epidemic story in English. Yang Mengtong recounted that she witnessed more warmth than hardship after the outbreak of the epidemic. Wu Qiutong told the story of her hometown Zhanjiang, Guangzhou, where  local people served as volunteers in the nucleic acid testing program. Liao Fengjun conveyed the hope and brightness by sharing the kindness of normal people during the epidemic prevention measures. Lin Chengfeng thought everyone in this situation is a hero by focusing on small moves in our daily life. Xie Tingting and Chen Xiangyu also expressed their feelings by sharing personal experiences. Dong Shiqian shared a story of nearly 400 college students who devoted their time in assisting in the work of nucleic acid testing and demonstrating the sense of responsibility of contemporary college students.

After the competition, the judges made comments on the contestants’ speeches.

(Mr. Colin Black Made Comments)

Mr. Colin complimented the contestants’ speeches. He said he felt the power of China from these stories told by students, and was deeply impressed by their confident performances. He hoped more students would seize the opportunity to show themselves and practice their spoken English.

(Dr. Sal Mirza Made Comments)

Dr. Sal showed his pride for these students courageous performance. He expressed that these speeches made the audience feel China’s anti-epidemic power with real stories. He emphasized the realistic meaning of the word “people” who brought the country hope. In addition, he expected more students to boldly participate in this type of competition and improve themselves.

(Professor Li Made Comments)

Professor Li Pinghai emphasized the importance of using a second language. He advised the contestants to enhance their spoken English and think thoroughly for each speech. He hoped more students would actively participate in this sort of competition and practice more, trying to enjoy the fun of the second language.

(Professor Zhong Made a Concluding Speech)

Professor Zhong Senwen said that this competition was to encourage students to speak up and help them improve English listening and speaking skills. For the competition, the courage of the contestants is more important. “Speaking” is a significant part of studying a language, which can improve students’ self-confidence in learning English. He encouraged students to seize more opportunities to strengthen their courage and self-confidence in their future studies.

The comment session was followed by the award ceremony. The judges and guests awarded prizes for the winners. Lin Chengfeng won the first prize; Yang Mengtong and Wu Qiutong won the second prize; Xie Tingting, Dong Shiqian, Chen Xiangyu and Liao Fengjun won the third prize.
