2022 “EIA CUP” English Speech Competition: Preliminary Round

In order to express Chinas fighting spirit against COVID-19 to the world, spread Chinese heroic deeds and anti-epidemic spirits, and improve students’ comprehensive ability to use English, the International School successfully held the 2022 EIA CUP English Speech Competition jointly with the Edvantage Institute (Australia).

The preliminary round of the competition was held in the Qizhi Building, on May 11th, 2022. Professor Li Pinghai, Deputy Dean of the International; Dr. Sal Mirza, Faculty of the International School; Mr. Yang Lijun, Counselor of the International School; and the staff from the Office attended the competition as judges.

During the competition, the contestants closely followed the theme and gave English speeches based on their own personal experiences or up-lifting anti-epidemic reported stories. Full of enthusiasm and emotion, they shared touching stories, images of all walks of life under the epidemic, highlighting anti-epidemic speed and concerted efforts under the leadership of the party. Though their speeches, students expressed admiration for the anti-epidemic heroes who went to the front line without hesitate, and showed their confidence in overcoming  the  epidemic. Contestants’ wonderful speeches deeply moved the audience, and received rounds of applause.

After the contestants’ speeches, Dr. Sal Mirza heaped praise on the students’ performance. He pointed out the competition was a good opportunity for students to practice English and gain experience. He encouraged the students to raise requirements for themselves and enhance their skills through practice. And he looked forward to improved performances next time. Afterwards, Professor Li Pinghai made a concluding speech. He emphasized that a good speech required a higher language level and stronger language using ability. He encouraged  students to actively participate in future activities to overcome nervousness and maintain self-confidence. Finally, he hoped that the students could find their own speech style through this competition and strengthen their English competence, and he expected to see more students in the future competitions.
