The 3rd Chinese Debate Competition for Freshmen of International School

The International School held the preliminary round and the final of the 3rd Chinese debate for freshmen in the Qizhi Building on November 9th and 23rd, 2020. Judges included Chen Xinying, President from the Student Union of Health Medical School, Ye Huajie and Zhang Zhibin, representatives from the Accounting School Debate Team, and other representatives from the Student Union of International School .

Before each session, the moderator explained the rules of the debate in detail and announced the start of the competition. In the preliminary stage, the topic focused on “good partners and good opponents, which are more important”. The pro side were required to give evidence to support “good opponents are more important”. And the con side gave reasons to prove “good partners are more important”. Four rounds among eight teams, “Xianmiao Roast Chicken Team” vs “Steamed Rice Team”, “KF Team” vs “Friendship Food Stall Team”, “Peppa Pig Team” vs “Lattes Team”, and “Gui Hua Yin Yi Team” vs “Spirit Young People in Pairs”. In the competition, the debaters provided a both visual and audio feast for audiences. Each team insisted on their own topic and illustrated their opinions with clarity and courage. After a few fierce rounds, “Xianmiao Roast Chicken Team”, “Friendship Food Stall Team”, “Lattes Team” and “Gui Hua Yin Yi Team” won the preliminary stage.

In the Preliminary Round

In the final stage, debaters centered around the topic “the network makes people closer or alienates them”. The pro side supported network makes people closer”. And the con side stated network alienates people”. In this session, team members fully demonstrated their flexible debating skills and solid theoretical foundation. Their debating produced an atmosphere of both tension and thrilling. In the end, “Friendship Food Stall Team” and “Gui Hua Yin Yi Team” won in the final. Chen Xiangyu, Li Wenjun, Li Zhiyu and Zhao Yuling were awarded the title of “Best Debater”.

Student Judges Making Comments

In closing, Zhang Zhibin and Ye Huajie, as student judges, made some comments on the competition. They emphasized that the most valuable learning of the debate was not the result, but the spirit of teamwork and the courage of expression. The hoped that all debaters can learn from the debate and make great progress through practice.
