The 2nd Chinese Debate Competition of International School


The 2nd Chinese Debate Competition of International School was held in the Qizhi Building in November 2019. It aimed to build a better learning atmosphere and develop students’ critical thinking and teamwork spirit. It was divided into two sessions, the preliminary and the final.

The preliminary session of the competition was carried out on November 12th. Six teams consisting of 24 students participated. Counselor Yang Lijun and Dr. Cai Qingfu and several students were invited to act as judges for this round of the competition. The topics “whether the well-matched marriage is an outdated marriage value” and “righteousness and profit, which one should be the foundation of contemporary interpersonal relationship” were debated in the preliminary session. After several fiercely contested rounds, 8 students won out and moved to the final.

Freshmen attended the debate competition actively.

Dr. Cai Qingfu pointed out the pros and cons of the two sides and shared his debating methods of multiplying double three principle. He emphasized the debaters’ confidence during the debate process

On November 20th, 2019, the final session of the debate competition came as planned. Counselor Yang Lijun , Professor Wanfei and students were invited to be judges. The proposition focused on the impact of mobile phones on relationships. The student union team’s position was that “mobile phones will shorten the distance between people. The opposition team from English Overseas Innovation Class insisted that mobile phones will alienate the distance between people.

During the competition, debaters combined theory with reality by using specific examples to support their arguments. Their points and arguments are persuasive and forceful. In the end, the student union team won the championship. Professor Wan concluded that adequate preparation and sufficient research are important for debaters. Besides, he advised that debaters need use body language and strong language during a debate.

The 2019 Chinese debate competition of International School came to a successful end. We wish all the candidates keep enthusiastic and we look forward to another lively debate competition in 2020.
