Professor Ma Shaobin’s Lecture on How to Have a Positive Outlook


The International School of Huashang College cordially welcomed Professor Ma Shaobin, a specialist in psychological training, to lecture on good mindset and psychological health care. Held in Room 511 of Qizhi Building on March 23rd, 2021; it was the 14th lecture of the Cultural Quality Lecture Series. The attendees included Dean Yu Huifen, staff of the International School, students of the International School, and faculty and students interested in the topic.

Ma Shaobin, Professor and Psychological Training Specialist, held the posts of the Chair of the Teaching-Research Office of Behavioral Science and Psychology for 27 years, the Deputy Dean, and Deputy Party Secretary for 8 years in the Medical School of Jinan University. During this period, he was awarded “Excellent Teacher” by Jinan University. In addition, he served as a member of the Standing Committee of the National Professional Committee for Teaching Medical Psychology, a member of the International Association of Chinese Medical Scientists and Psychologists, a member of the International Society of Psychosomatic Medicine, and a member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Mental Health Association. He has been invited to lecture in most provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and special administrative regions in China. Passionate and affable, he engages audiences with lively and interesting lectures with interaction and profundity. In 2009, he was awarded “Excellent Trainer in Guangdong Province” by the Guangdong Enterprise Training Association.

This lecture attracted a full house with students eager to hear from Professor Shaobin. Professor Ma Shaobin lectured from three perspectives: the importance of a healthy mindset, ways of building a healthy mindset, and the approaches to improve positive cognition. He proceeded with his speech by providing real-world examples and actively interacting with the audience. His speech was entertaining, informative and thought-provoking, making the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing.

Using an engaging PPT, Professor Ma exemplified topics focusing on mental health. At the start, he identified the meaning of good mentality, which is neither blindly optimistic nor the AQ spirit. He advised students to learn to distinguish necessary and unnecessary pressure, accept stress that can motivate potential and release the superfluous. Professor Ma expressed that the ultimate aims of psychological adjustment are building self-respect, building self-confidence, and possessing rationality, calmness and positiveness. Then, he explained the close relationship between good mentality and positive cognition by demonstrating the conversation between a psychologist and a lovelorn adult. He concluded that cognition depends on the perspective problems are viewed from and keeping rational cognition is the essential step to build a healthy mindset. In closing, Professor Ma encouraged students to develop a good mindset by habitually applying correct cognition to tackling practical problems.

During the Q&A part, students enthusiastically put forward their questions and opinions; for instance, how to help friends with a depressive disorder?, Is there any relationship between the increasing number of the depressed patients and the better living condition? Professor Ma responded patiently and the audience benefited from his insight.

In closing, Dean Yu firstly thanked Professor Ma Shaobin for his entertaining and informative speech. Then, she concluded that Prof. Ma gave an impressive and wonderful lecture in a humorous tone, from which the audience could glean practical knowledge for fostering a good mindset and keeping a healthy mentality. In addition, she emphasized the importance of keeping a positive outlook and encouraged students to embrace everyday optimistically and enthusiastically. Finally, Dean Yu praised the faculty and students for their contributions, engagement and attendance.
