Dr. Weijie Ming Lectures on Extraordinariness in Ordinariness


The International School of Huashang College cordially welcomed Dr. Ming Weijie to share his experience on study and business start-up, including his academic years at Oxford University and Harvard University. This was the 12th lecture of the Cultural Quality Lecture Series, held online on May 26th, 2020. The attendees included Dean Yu Huifen and other staff of International School, all the students of International School and other students interested in the topic.

Ming Weijie, a doctor of medicine and post doctor of Oxford University and Harvard University, is Assistant Dean of the International School of Jinan University and an Associate Professor in the Basic Medicine School of Jinan University. He served as a Distinguished Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University and a Postdoctoral Co-advisor at Harvard University. He worked as a Researcher at Harvard University and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a Visiting Researcher at Oxford University and UK National Epidemiology Center for perinatal medicine. After finishing his postdoctoral work, he didnt stayed abroad for high salary, but returning to China and started up his business. Now as the CEO of a medical device enterprise in Shenzhen, he has developed clinical research programs during long-term cooperation with universities in America, Britain, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, Taiwan and Hongkong. The medical team he led has developed global leading medical devices, filling the lack of independent research and development of medical devices in China. He is the holder of 13 national patents and has published 55 conference and academic papers, 28 of which are SCI and SSCI articles.

During the lecture, Dr. Ming shared his study experiences. Graduating from senior high school, he came to Guangdong from Hongkong alone pursuing his studies. Although encountering many difficulties, he was successful through his perseverance and diligence. He clearly remembered his formative years when he studied at Jinan university. His experiences there made him realize the cultures differences between Southern China and Northern China and the charm of them, which was his motivation to pursue his study abroad in the following years. Fortunately, he realized his dreams about studying at Oxford and Harvard University. Eventually, he received great academic achievements for his brilliant performance there. In addition, he mentioned his experience of participating in student union organizations while studying abroad, which offered great help to him, especially starting his businesses later. By sharing his personal study experiences, Dr. Ming emphasized the importance of continuous learning, time management, activities engagement and pursuing dreams.

Then, Dr. Ming gave students a brief introduction about medicine and artificial intelligence and gave his own opinions on medical technology development. He mentioned the medical health application “Safe Pregnancy” which could let testers know the probability of suffering from gestational diabetes.

At the end, Dr. Ming encouraged students to bravely pursue their dreams, improve their “soft skills” and strengthen their emotional management skill, so as to better adapt to the ever-changing social environment.

In the interaction part, students actively asked questions. For example, how to persist while studying when meeting difficulties? How to learn programming and Python if interested in them? Dr. Ming answered them patiently and gave some suggestions.

In closing, Dean Yu concluded with comments on the lecture. First of all, she expressed thanks to Dr. Ming Weijie for his wonderful speech and felt proud of him as her student. Then, she summarized Dr. Ming’s three shining points: his patriotism, sense of responsibility and spirit of innovation. Dean Yu wished this lecture could bring students some inspiration on the innovation and entrepreneurship. Finally, she shared the meaning of each part of Dr.Mings name to all students to convey her expectations: “setting a specific goal and adhering to it”, “making contributions to our country and making it greater” and “making ourselves more outstanding”.
